The Idea of Order

Overheard in the Hunter Warm-up Ring…

…well, just the stuff I could repeat and keep it PG around here still.
This is actually a retread of sorts of an older comic I did back in 2011. I remember being totally amused, and sometimes totally dumbfounded, by the statements I’d overhear in the warm up when we went to HITS in Ocala (some of which were actually being directed at my sister and I). Given some of the statements, I’m not so sure some coaches were as helpful as they think they were, but they certainly were entertaining. 😉

Braiding: Another form of Character Building…

…or POW torture. Hard to say.
Have I mentioned that I’m not so much a fan of braiding? Once or twice maybe? It’s really too bad I’m OCD about it since that forces me to do my own horses and most of my clients. No matter how many times I do it I’ve yet to convince myself it’s enjoyable; especially the next morning when I’m fixing the braids that my equine darlings tried to rub out. Thankfully these days I do mostly dressage braids which are much quicker and less arthritis-inducing than putting in 40 some hunter braids.

How many horses can you fit into a 20X60 meter pen?

…it depends how high you stack them.
Though I recognize that the warm-up ring is a necessary evil at horse shows, I still don’t understand why so many people riding in it are either feckless or believe they OWN the ring. I mean seriously, I don’t care how $$$$$$ your horse is or that you’re riding a higher level than I am, it doesn’t give you the right to throw common courtesy out the window and try to run me over. Also, I get that there are green horses (I have one!), but let’s all just agree not to take the screaming harpy on a string into the warm-up ring with 47 other horses when you have other options (when you don’t have other options, I get it. Also I feel your pain. :().

My Dad made sure my sisters and I had plenty of horses…

Subsequently he never had to look very far to find us most weekends.
It occurred to me today that I never really did that whole ‘rebellious-teenager/party-until-I-can’t-remember-it’ spiel. I’m not particularly upset by this. It actually only solidifies my belief that horses are a great way to keep kids (and quasi-adults like myself) out of trouble (I mean who has TIME for any other sort of trouble when you have horse shenanigans?).
